MARTELLO SHIELD MATCH - REPORT
The battle for the 2012 Martello shield commenced under cloudy humid conditions at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, between the Martello Reds, and the Martello Whites.
With the two captains ,Jack Austin (Whites) and Sudi Godagama (Reds) tossing the coin at 6.30pm, the air was thick with anticipation of what to expect from the fine group of players who had assembled to play against each other on the hallowed turf of Ben Kavanagh Reserve.
With the whites winning the toss, and electing to bat, the pressure was squarely on the shoulders of the openers, and it took only the first ball by “Jimmy Kerr” to have Jack Austin walking back to the Members, caught behind by Sam Hart at first slip for a duck. Mild panic was now in place for the Martello Whites, as with the last ball of the first over, Dan Walker, bowled by a massive in swinger from James Kerr to have the Whites reeling at 2/1 after 1 over.
D.S.Maxwell into the attack, and Cooper Balic became Dante’s first victim with a beauty that removed off stump, out for a duck, score, 3/6 after 4 over’s. Will Glenister was tossed the ball, and he removed Brodie “Bozo” Amor for 3, butifully caught by Brendon “Buds” Morris, score, 4/8 and things looking dire for the Whites after 5 over’s. Ryan Morris joined Chris Chamberlain at the wicket, and they immediately went on the attack, with some clever glides and lofted drives, this pair soon had the Scorer cracking a sweat with some quick scoring. Just as these two appeared settled, disaster, Patty Heenan Tempted Chris to have a go, and he holed out to Sahil Dhir at mid off, a fine catch which saw him dismissed for 8, and the score now 5/21 after 8 over’s. With Ryan Retirering on 13 valuable runs, Jacob Woinarski was joined by Tom Long, and these two went on the attack, plundering runs to all parts of the ground and were doing fine until Alex Johnstone tossed one up, Jacobs eyes lit up, and unfortunately hit it up to Sudi Godagama at mid wicket to have walking back to the rooms for 8. Score now 6/40. Connor Jamieson came in and tried to keep the score moving, but was soon bowled by Sudi Godagama for 4, and the score, 7/53. Tom Long retired for 7, and Lincoln Wines was met by Aidan Morris out in the middle, but the partnership didn’t last, as no brotherly love shown here, Aidan bowled by “Buds” Morris for a duck, score 8/53, which became 9/53 again, no brotherly love shown here, as Brendon, now on a hatrick, after removing Ryan for 14. K.Frencham into the attack, and cleverly tossed one up to Big Zac Harris, who stepped down the wicket, had a swing and was stumped by big Brother Daniel Frencham for a duck, score 10/55, which saw Lincoln and Tom then put on valuable runs to close the innings at 10/71.
Martello Reds chasing 72 to win in twenty over’s, will they have it their own way, or will they struggle?
Dante and Sudi opening the innings, and batting nicely until Sudi was run out by a direct hit by Ryan “Rhino” Morris, 1/13 after 4overs. “Jimmy” Kerr strode to the middle and took guard, scored a single, and then found the safe hands of Daniel Walker off the bowling of Zac Harris, score 2/20 after six over’s.
Patty batting well was joined by Dan Frencham, and together put on 18 runs before Daniel played across the line, and was bowled by Dan Walker for 8. Score now 3/36 and the Martello Reds now looking a little shaky. Panic Stations now as Sahil lasted 2 balls before losing his leg stump to Jacob Woinarski for a duck, and at 4/38, something special required to pull off the win. Will Glenister batting well compiled 6 before retirering, and with Sammy (NCIS) Hart, scoring freely with “Buds”Morris, Disaster! Strikes, Lincoln Wines sprinting like a startled Gazelle, swooped in and in one moment of pure class, hit the stumps from 30m to have Brendon on his way off the ground. 5/60 after 17 over’s. Patty retiring on 12, had Kyle Frencham at the crease with Sam and he made a quick 4 runs before he retired which brought Alex Johnstone to the crease who then smacked a lively 22 not out to get the Martello Reds over the line in a very entertaining game of 20/20 Cricket.
Final Score Martello Reds 5/90 Defeated the Martello Whites, 11/71.
Best Player awards, Alex Johnstone, Martello Reds-22 not out,
James Kerr, Martello Whites- 2/2.
